- Microsoft Agent was released in 1997 as a way for third parties to implement the interactive character technology used in Microsoft Office Assistant with the last release in 1998
- BonziBuddy was a trojan that reset the user's browser to the Bonzi website, installed a browser toolbar, collected user information, and served advertisements
- Bayes and Laplace came about Bayes' Theorem completely independently, with Laplace having no knowledge of Bayes' prior work. It remains uncertain as to why Bayes' work went wholly unnoticed after being published by Price
- Before Bayes, a similar attempt at the inference of probability was conducted by Thomas Simpson, who took interest in the problem for its application to astronomy and wrote a letter "On the Advantage of Taking the Mean of a Number of Observations, in practical Astronomy", approaching uncertainty from the angle of error distributions. - Grice's Maxims or the cooperative principle is a concept of four maxims introduced by linguist Paul Grice: Quantity (be informative), Quality (be truthful), Relation (be relevant), and Manner (be clear), that encompasses the nature of people in achieving effective conversational communication
- The Comic Sans font was developed by designer Vincent Connare for Microsoft Bob to better fit the cartoon dog "Rover", who was originally speaking in Times New Roman. Rover Bob is Sans Undertale?
- Some harsher critics of Microsoft's attempt at social interfaces during the release of Microsoft Bob included computer scientists Jaron Lanier and Ben Shneiderman in 1995. Lanier claimed that "Agents make people redefine themselves into lesser beings" and that "computers, unlike other tools, seem to produce the best results when users have an antagonistic attitude towards them" while Shneiderman stated "Vague goal specification is dangerous... who would use a system that allowed a vague command like 'Delete all old files' or even vaguer 'Delete all useless files'".
- The Media Equation also ruled out some possibilities against CASA: The subjects were computer-literate with sustained responses meaning that they did not believe the computers truly had human capabilities nor were acting impulsively. When asked, none of them were purposefully suspending belief nor purposefully acting social for any reason. Could it be that the subjects were simply thinking of the programmer when behaving socially? No, because when asked, they all said they were not and they all presumed that both programs were created by the same programmer rather than different ones, and were correct.

Too Hot to Handle: The Race for Cold Fusion (Book) by Frank Close, 1991. The first major book written about cold fusion written from the perspective of a physicist following the story as an outside observer. Has particularly good info on the gamma ray peak dispute. Close also gave a public talk on the contents of his book in 1991 which was recorded.
Voodoo Science: The Road from Foolishness to Fraud (Book) by Robert Park, 2000. Cold fusion is mentioned as one of several examples of 'Voodoo Science' throughout the book, which generally has a focus on Washington and science funding.
The Cornell Cold Fusion Archive (originally curated by Bruce Lewenstein). Has an extensive copy of many original documents, news coverage, etc. They also provided me with a digitized video copy of the Baltimore APS meeting.
Truth and Consequences: How Colleges and Universities Meet Public Crises (Book) by Jerrold Footlick, 1997. A chapter of this book is dedicated to assessing how the University of Utah administration handled the cold fusion controversy.

Footnotes:
- Scrabble was preceded by Butts' other game, Lexiko, which did not have a board. Scrabble was previously called "Criss-Cross Words" and "It" before that. The game was renamed to "Scrabble" by entrepreneur James Brunot, who also rearranged the premium squares on the board and simplified the rules to sell the game.
- Monty Plays Scrabble had a sequel "Master Monty" (US Release 1987) with a larger lexicon and a more "difficult" tier (five tiers instead of four).
- Official English Scrabble currently uses one of two dictionaries: the NASPA Word List with 196,601 words and the Collins Scrabble Words with 280,887 as of 2024. The official dictionary used in the US at the time of Monty was the OSPD1, though I could not find how many words it contained.
- Turcan's Computer Scrabble was published by Leisure Genius. The edition for the ZX Spectrum was developed by Psion, with the fake words bug quickly patched in a second version.
- A trie is a distinct data structure from a "tree". Computer scientists sometimes pronounce trie as "try" to make this distinction. It was originally defined mathematically by Alex Thue in 1912 and in the context of computer science by René de la Briandais in 1959.
- The idea of storing potential letters on the board was shared by Peter Weinberger of AT&T Bell Laboratories, who had made his own Scrabble move-generator (94,000 words, 1 to 2 minutes a turn), in private communication with Appel and Jacobson.
- Maven ended up using the dawg due to its smaller size and therefore quicker download speed, whereas Quackle uses the GADDAG for its faster move generation. Either is considered acceptable by the general community due to word generation not being a bottleneck in modern Scrabble bots.
- The Monte Carlo Method was originally suggested by Stanislaw Ulam to John von Neumann for the simulation of neutron diffusion in nuclear fission after the invention of the first electronic computer: The ENIAC, another US government wartime project.
- One significant difference between Maven and Quackle is Quackle's use of "superleaves": a pre-computed database of values for every single possible combination of 1-6 remaining rack tiles.
- The deterministic search in the Quackle endgame is the B* search which is a type of "best-first search", though modern algorithms may opt for exhaustive searching, such as a program by the company Ortograf (according to Del Solar, 2022) and Macondo (Del Solar, 2023).
- AlphaGo is bot by Google DeepMind that plays the boardgame Go, defeating reigning Go champion Lee Sedol in 2016. DeepMind also made DeepNash, which is a bot that plays Stratego, a boardgame involving imperfect information, a broad possibility space, and strategies involving bluffs. DeepNash uses the game theory concept of achieving Nash equilibrium rather than something like Monte Carlo, and reached a top-three ranking on the Stratego platform Gravon.
- Macondo is a new Scrabble bot currently still in beta that also uses Monte Carlo Methods but aims to be better than Quackle, started in 2017 by César Del Solar, who also founded the online Scrabble community Woogles.
- Elise is a Scrabble bot released in 2013 with a more sophisticated move evaluation similar to that of chess engines. Compared to the Quackle 0.97 Champion Player, it was measured to win just over 60% of games in 10-20% less time per move (Street, 2013). Thank you Alex Dings for this detail.

Cold Fusion Research – A report of the Energy Advisory Board to the United States Department of Energy. November 1989.
Too Hot to Handle: The Race for Cold Fusion (Book) by Frank Close, 1991. The first major book written about cold fusion written from the perspective of a physicist following the story as an outside observer. Has particularly good info on the gamma ray peak dispute. Close also gave a public talk on the contents of his book in 1991 which was recorded.
Voodoo Science: The Road from Foolishness to Fraud (Book) by Robert Park, 2000. Cold fusion is mentioned as one of several examples of 'Voodoo Science' throughout the book, which generally has a focus on Washington and science funding.
The Cornell Cold Fusion Archive (originally curated by Bruce Lewenstein). Has an extensive copy of many original documents, news coverage, etc. They also provided me with a digitized video copy of the Baltimore APS meeting.
Truth and Consequences: How Colleges and Universities Meet Public Crises (Book) by Jerrold Footlick, 1997. A chapter of this book is dedicated to assessing how the University of Utah administration handled the cold fusion controversy.
The Believers (Documentary) by Clayton Brown and Monica Long Ross, 2012. This film catalogues the diminished state of cold fusion research two decades later, interviewing many of its remaining proponents. It features some of the last interviews with Martin Fleischmann before his death in 2012.

Do you think all the frequencies are happening on this one mechanical device, or do you think there are multiple animals making the call at different frequencies? I'm leaning towards the wobbles being the higher pitch sounds, and the "progressive buckling" being the lower pitch sound.. I think it would be SO cool to partner up with someone and write a paper on this.
