Indic Wikimedia Hackathon Hyderabad 2026

Program Purpose

Fifty-six contributors gathered at IIIT Hyderabad for three days to improve Wikimedia’s technical ecosystem. Unlike traditional hackathons that focus primarily on rapid prototyping, the Indic Wikimedia Hackathon 2026 introduced dedicated refinement sessions that encouraged participants to improve code quality, documentation, usability, and long-term maintainability.

The Indic Wikimedia Hackathon Hyderabad 2026 was organized by Indic MediaWiki Developers User Group (aka Indic-TechCom). The hackathon took place in Hyderabad from 26 – 28 June 2026 (with 25 June as Day 0), in collaboration with the Open Knowledge Initiatives team and OSDG club at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad.

Wikimedia hackathons are spaces for developers, designers, content editors, and other community stakeholders to collaborate on building technical solutions that help improve tools, workflows, and overall user experience across Wikimedia projects.

This hackathon is designed for:

  • Technical contributors active in the Wikimedia technical ecosystem, which includes developers, maintainers (admins/interface admins), translators, designers, researchers, documentation writers, etc.
  • Content contributors having an in-depth understanding of technical issues in their Wikimedia projects, like Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wiktionary, etc.
  • Contributors to any other open-source community or those who have participated in Wikimedia events in the past, and would like to get started with contributing to Wikimedia technical spaces.

Participants worked on a curated set of technical tasks prepared by mentors and organizers. They were also encouraged to propose their own project ideas, provided they included a clear problem statement, implementation approach, and were reviewed by mentors before the event. 

Building on the experience and learnings from previous hackathons, this event was more efficient, inclusive, and collaborative. 

The event aimed to involve more developers who have experience with the Wikimedia ecosystem and had prior experience already contributing to tools, extensions, gadgets, or other technical projects. Editors were paired up with developers to provide domain knowledge, helping them better understand editing workflows, user needs, and the intended behaviour of the applications/ extensions/ gadgets being developed. 

Unlike other hackathons where rapid development is the primary focus, this event was not completely hacking but also incorporated dedicated  refinement sessions.These sessions encouraged participants to improve the quality of the works by refining  design, UI, data privacy, code optimization, documentation and overall maintainability. Additionally, the program also included brainstorming sessions, group discussions, workshops  to help participants  understand a broader perspective of this ecosystem beyond their individual projects.

Scope and Timeline

The hackathon was conducted as a three day in-person event  at the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H), a long-standing partner that provides space for technical and community events. The venue supported collaborative work through dedicated hacking spaces, mentor interactions, and discussion areas. 

The scope of the event was flexible enough to encourage participants to work on a curated set of Wikimedia-related technical projects and tasks suitable for a hackathon which prepared by mentors or a custom project proposed by their own and reviewed by experienced developers and organizers, along with Team Challenges from Wikimania Hackathon 2026.

The program was structured into distinct phases. The first half of the event (approximately one and a half days) focused entirely on development where the first part of the first day was catered to some introductions and welcome notes, ground rules, ice breaker activities, followed by continuous hacking. On the second day, the event had a social activity and the morning session was mostly catered to workshops, brainstorming sessions, and getting to know about OKI work. The second half started with refinement phases. The third day focused completely on refinement, wrap-up and showcase.

The majority of participants were developers with prior experience in the Wikimedia technical ecosystem. A smaller group consisted of experienced Wikimedia editors with technical knowledge, who collaborated with developers by providing domain expertise and user perspectives during the hackathon. 

Activities Conducted

Prior to the hackathon, an orientation call was conducted for participants to give an overview of the program, the Wikimedia technical ecosystem, team formation details, and some logistical and operational arrangements. The session also introduced participants to Wikimedia, its technical ecosystem, guided them through basic account setup, and explained the overall hackathon format. 

Following the orientation,  participants were encouraged to have a call with their specific teams and mentors. These discussions helped participants better understand their assigned projects, including the scope, objectives, expected outcomes, and technical requirements. Mentors introduced project-specific workflows, outlining the scope, objectives, and tasks for each participant to help them engage effectively during the hackathon.

During the event, participants worked on pre-curated tasks across multiple Wikimedia-related projects and collaborated closely with mentors to understand issue tracking, patch submission, and debugging workflows. Mentors supported participants across different projects, helping them navigate both technical challenges and Wikimedia-specific contribution processes.

To complement the technical program, the hackathon also included community-building activities. An icebreaker session at the beginning of the event helped participants interact and build connections. On the second day, interested participants joined a social walk around Hyderabad, providing an informal opportunity for networking. A dedicated women’s dinner was also organized to foster stronger connections among women participants, encourage inclusion, and support long-term retention within the Wikimedia technical community. 

Towards the conclusion of the event, a project showcase and presentations session was conducted, during which participants demonstrated their work and shared learnings with fellow participants, mentors, and organizers.  

Outputs and Outcomes

The hackathon enabled participants to work on pre-identified tasks across multiple Wikimedia-related repositories, resulting in code contributions, feature enhancements, bug fixes, and documentation improvements. Throughout the event, participants gained practical experience with Wikimedia development workflows, including issue tracking, patch submission, code review, and collaborative problem-solving, with guidance from experienced mentors. Several participants continued engaging with their assigned projects after the event, indicating effective onboarding into Wikimedia technical workflows.

As part of the Indic Wikimedia Hackathon Hyderabad 2026, several teams worked on projects that directly align with the official Team Challenges announced for Wikimania 2026.

  • WikiLinkua – Gamify knowledge, Stream data with Wikidata

  • Wanda / WandaScore / WandaScribe – Welcoming newcomers, Fix the sources / Update the obsolete, The editor of the future
  • Scribe – Stream data with Wikidata, Connect multilingual knowledge
  • WikiEvolution – Explore knowledge
  • WikiNPOV Drift Detector – Deciphering biases
  • Language selector rewrite – Connect multilingual knowledge

These contributions included code changes, improvements, and related updates submitted under mentor guidance.

What went well:

Program design:

  • The overall event design enabled participants to collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds and work effectively on technical projects.
  • The combination of structured onboarding, continuous hacking, and dedicated refinement sessions supported steady progress throughout the event.
  • Refinement sessions encouraged participants to improve code quality, documentation, user interface, and maintainability rather than focusing solely on completing tasks.

Mentorship and technical contributions:

  • Clear project introductions and continuous mentor support helped participants engage confidently with their assigned tasks.
  • Most of the identified hackathon tasks were actively worked on during the event.
  • Several participants continued contributing to their assigned projects after the hackathon, demonstrating successful onboarding into Wikimedia technical workflows.

Collaboration:

  • Pairing editors with developers proved valuable, as editors helped developers better understand user workflows, expected tool behaviour, and usability considerations.
  • Workshops and discussion sessions complemented the hacking sessions by providing participants with a broader understanding of the Wikimedia technical ecosystem.

Diversity and inclusion:

  • The hackathon achieved approximately <>% women participation, the highest among events organized by the User Group to date.
  • The women’s dinner helped foster stronger connections among women participants and contributed to a more welcoming environment.

What can be improved/Learnings?

Program schedule

  • Participants requested additional time for the project showcase and presentations.
  • Fifteen-minute breaks were considered too short and could be extended in future editions.
  • Starting sessions at 9:00 AM posed challenges for some participants because of commuting time.

Project selection

  • Hackathon tasks require more review before the event to reduce duplication of effort.
  • Greater emphasis should be placed on improving existing Wikimedia tools rather than developing new ones where similar solutions already exist.

Mentorship

  • Participants experienced delays when waiting for scheduled online mentor support.
  • Increasing mentor availability or ensuring more mentors are physically present during the event could improve the overall experience.

What’s next:

Based on the outcomes and observations from the Indic Wikimedia Hackathon Hyderabad 2026, the following recommendations are proposed for future editions of the event:

  • Prioritise improving existing Wikimedia tools and applications over developing new ones, where appropriate.
  • Continue incorporating dedicated refinement sessions to improve the quality and sustainability of contributions.
  • Allocate more time for project showcases, presentations, and participant discussions
  • Review the event schedule by extending break durations and considering a later start time where feasible.
  • Continue initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion, including activities that support participation and retention of women contributors.
  • Strengthen post-event follow-up and mentorship to encourage continued contributions beyond the hackathon.
  • Explore organizing additional hackathons, workshops, and technical events in college campuses to improve accessibility and encourage new technical contributors.

You might have already heard the buzz: the Wikimedia Hackathon is gearing up for an incredible event in Tallinn, Estonia, from May 3rd to 5th, 2024. Now, we’re thrilled to announce that the Registration form, which also includes an optional Scholarship application, is officially open until Friday January 5th 2024.

Participation in the in-person Wikimedia Hackathon in Tallinn is contingent upon registration. The registration portal will remain accessible until we hit our venue’s capacity, which is approximately set at 220 participants. Here’s the exciting part: the event itself is entirely free of charge ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to join us for this fantastic experience.  Please note that participants are required to make individual travel arrangements unless they have been awarded a scholarship. Znani zmagovalci Arnesovega HackathONa, izzive reševalo 40 študentov v 10 ekipah

13. in 14. maja se je v Portorožu v sklopu konference Dnevi slovenske informatike odvil drugi, 24-urni krog prvega Arnesovega vseslovenskega HackathONa.

Pod sloganom “Z odprto znanostjo sooblikuj prihodnost” se je na prvem Arnesovem vseslovenskem HackathONu v reševanju aktualnih in pomembnih tematik pomerilo več kot 70 študentov iz vse Slovenije, od katerih se je 40 najboljših uvrstilo v finalni krog.

Prvo mesto v roke ekipi IDealni Scenarij za rešitev za upravljanje podatkov

Strokovna komisija je imela izjemno težko delo, saj je bilo v množici odličnih projektov težko izbrati najboljše. Zmagovalna ekipa z imenom IDealni Scenarij, ki so jo sestavljali Alen Cigler, Ruben Ferreira, Hana Skitek, Erazem Stanonik in Jana Volk, je predstavila rešitev za učinkovito upravljanje, deljenje in izkoriščanje podatkov brez tveganja za varnost, zasebnost ali suverenost podatkov. Njihov sistem standardizira in regulira način upravljanja, deljenja in izkoriščanja podatkov, kar odpravlja obstoječe ovire za učinkovito izmenjavo in uporabo podatkov ter omogoča posameznikom, podjetjem, raziskovalnim organizacijam in vladnim institucijam raziskovanje novih priložnosti, ki jih prinaša sodobna tehnologija.

Na drugo mesto so se uvrstili Filip Štamcar, Nik Pirc in Matija Derganc iz skupine Kenguruji, ki so v 24 urah izboljšali poplavni napovedni model, s pomočjo katerega so ustvarili nove poplavne karte Slovenije, podatke primerjali z obstoječo protipoplavno infrastrukturo in podatke ocenjene višine vode glede na vremensko napoved prikazovali na spletni strani.

Tretje mesto so na tekmovanju osvojili člani skupine Rudarji znanja, ki so v zasedbi Blaž Erzar, Haris Kupinić, Luka Salvatore Pecoraro, Jaša Samec in Jovana Videnović ustvarili projekt žARKO, ki s pomočjo fotografij in zajema drugih podatkov razpoznava kratkoročno obsevanje, napoveduje količino proizvedene energije sončnih elektrarn in zaznava okvare ali slabše delovanje celic zaradi umazanije. Vse tri ekipe so pri svojem delu izhajale iz podatkov, ki so na voljo na portalu Odprti podatki Slovenije – OPSI, drugo in tretje uvrščena ekipa pa je uporabila tudi podatke Agencije Republike Slovenije za okolje – ARSO.

BliskBus najboljši v reševanju izziva podjetja Sandoz | Lek

Sponzorski izziv podjetja Sandoz | Lek je bil osredotočen na obdelavo naravnega jezika in velike jezikovne modele pri označevanju zdravil in navodil za uporabo. Tekmovalci so dostopali do ekskluzivnih podatkovnih zbirk podjetja ter podatkov Centralne baze zdravil, Pravilnika o označevanju in navodil za uporabo ter podatkov na portalu OPSI. Nagrado za najboljšo rešitev je prejela ekipa BliskBus, ki sta jo sestavljala Iva Černoša in Neo Xander Kirbiš.

Povezujemo znanje s sodelovanjem, izkušnjami in strokovnostjo

Arnesov HackathON so soorganizirali Slovensko društvo Informatika, Portal OPSI, ki ga upravljata Ministrstvo za digitalno preobrazbo ter Ministrstvo za javno upravo, Fakulteta za računalništvo in informatiko Univerze v Ljubljani, Nacionalni kompetenčni center za superračunalništvo EuroCC SLING in Slovenska skupnost odprte znanosti. Dogodek pa je potekal tudi pod častnim pokroviteljstvom Slovenske nacionalne komisije za UNESCO.

Nepogrešljive podatke, izkušnje in strokovnost so v sklopu HackathONa delili tudi Institut Jožef Stefan, Agencija Republike Slovenije za okolje (ARSO), Institut informacijskih znanosti Maribor (IZUM), Clarin.si, Center za jezikovne vire in tehnologije (CJVT) ter Inštitut za novejšo zgodovino.

V sklopu HackathONa so strokovno pomoč in podporo tekmovalcev nudili mentorji ter komisija z različnih področij, ki jih je naslavljal HackathON. Tako smo sodelovali z Ano Slavec (UP FAMNIT in InnoRenew CoE), Janijem Pogačarjem s Fakultete za informacijske študije v Novem Mestu, Marino Rajič z Ministrstva za digitalno preobrazbo, Alenko Pšeničnik z Ministrstva za javno upravo, Slavkom Žitnikom in Damjanom Fujsom s Fakultete za računalništvo in informatiko UL, Sergejo Masten z Arhiva družboslovnih podatkov (ADP), Gašperjem Hrastljem s Slovenske nacionalne komisije za UNESCO ter Samom Staničem z Univerze v Novi Gorici, koordinatorjem Slovenskega superračunalniškega omrežja SLING.

Dogodka prav tako ne bi bilo brez finančnih sponzorjev, ki so prispevali v denarni sklad za privlačne nagrade: Ministrstvo za digitalno preobrazbo, Sandoz | Lek, Modra Zavarovalnica.

V letu 2025 novi izzivi z odprtimi podatki in superračunalniki

Zaradi velikega zanimanja in uspešne izvedbe, bomo dogodek ponovili tudi v letu 2025, z novimi izzivi, z več sponzorji in še bolj pestrim programom, saj želimo odprto znanost, odprte podatke in superračunalniške kapacitete prikazati kot temeljni sklop dela v znanstvenoraziskovalnem svetu in tudi v gospodarstvu.

HackathON: S superračunalnikom in odprtimi podatki proti zmagi

Arnes v sodelovanju s Slovenskim društvom Informatika, portalom Odprti podatki Slovenije, Slovensko skupnostjo odprte znanosti, Nacionalnim kompetenčnim centrom za superračunalništvo, Fakulteto za računalništvo in informatiko na Univerzi v Ljubljani ter pod častnim pokroviteljstvom Slovenske nacionalne komisije za UNESCO predstavlja prvi Arnesov vseslovenski HackathON.

Rdeča nit tekmovanja je uporaba načel odprte znanosti s poudarkom na odprtih podatkih in ugotavljanjem njihovega potenciala prek obdelave s pomočjo superračunalnika za reševanje izzivov, ki naslavljajo cilje trajnostnega razvoja UNESCO. V skladu s tem smo za tekmovalce pripravili predloge izzivov, lahko pa so si izmislili svojega. Vsi sodelujoči se lahko pomerijo tudi v dodatnem izzivu podjetja Sandoz – Lek.

HackathON poteka v dveh krogih. Začel se je 4. aprila s spoznavnim dogodkom na Fakulteti za računalništvo in informatiko na Univerzi v Ljubljani. Pred tem smo za udeležence organizirali tudi tri izobraževanja: Uvod v superračunalništvo, Spoznaj odprto znanost in Znanost, komunikacija in mediji.

10 ekip in 40 inovativnih tekmovalcev

Drugi krog, ki je bolj praktične narave, bo potekal 13. in 14. maja v Portorožu v sklopu konference »Dnevi slovenske informatike«.

Tekmovalni del bo trajal 24 ur, od 13. maja ob 12. uri do 14. maja ob 12. uri. Deset ekip oziroma skoraj 40 tekmovalcev z inovativnimi rešitvami, ki so predstavljene na spletni strani https://hackathon.si/uvrsceni, bodo imele v času tekmovanja omogočen dostop do EuroHPC Vega, najzmogljivejšega slovenskega superračunalnika. Zaključni dogodek s predstavitvijo projektov in mreženjem s študenti bo ob 14.30, zmagovalce pa bomo razglasili v večernem programu, ki se bo začel ob 19. uri.

HackatON organiziramo z namenom združevanja različnih disciplin, ne le znotraj področja STEM, temveč tudi s področji družboslovja in humanistike, ter povezovanje študentov različnih univerz. Raznolikost in sodelovanje sta ključna za inovativne rešitve, ki bodo povezale znanje.

Kmalu boste lahko odkrili inovativne rešitve mladih talentov, ki združujejo odprte podatke, superračunalništvo in multidisciplinarne pristope za reševanje izzivov, ki so usmerjeni k ciljem trajnostnega razvoja UNESCO.

Odvil se je prvi krog Arnesovega vseslovenskega HackathONa

4. aprila se je odvil 1. krog prvega Arnesovega vseslovenskega HackathONa. Prvega kroga se je udeležilo 20 ekip oz. 70 študentov iz vse Slovenije.

Prvi krog je bil zastavljen z namenom spoznavanja, zato so tekmovalci le iskali ideje za svoje rešitve izziva. Njihova naloga je bila do 9. aprila oddati 1- do 2-stranski dokument z idejno zasnovo rešitve, v kateri bodo opisali tudi, s kakšno metodologijo se bodo lotili izziva.

Tekmovalci bodo pri delu uporabili superračunalnike

Nekatere ekipe bodo pri svojem delu uporabile superračunalniške oz. HPC zmogljivosti. Na voljo jim je Arnes gruča, v drugem krogu pa bodo lahko svoje izračune pridobili s pomočjo HPC Vega, najzmogljivejšega slovenskega superračunalnika.

V okviru prvega Arnesovega vseslovenskega HackathONa je NCC SLING pripravil tudi izobraževanje Osnove superračunalništva, ki se ga je udeležilo 28 študentov. Za tekmovalce, ki so se uvrstili v drugi krog, smo 18. aprila pripravili izobraževanje o vsebnikih na superračunalnikih, delavnica pa je bila odprta tudi za druge zainteresirane.

Kdo se je uvrstil v drugi krog?

V drugi krog se je uvrstilo 10 ekip z najvišjim številom točk. Zaključni dogodek bo 13. in 14. maja potekal v hotelu Bernardin v Portorožu v okviru konference Dnevi slovenske informatike.

Na prvi Arnesov vseslovenski HackathON se je prijavilo 22 ekip in 79 študentov

Letos Arnes v so-organizaciji s Slovenskim društvom Informatika (SDI), Portalom OPSI, Slovensko skupnostjo odprte znanosti, Nacionalnim kompetenčnim centrom za superračunalništvo NCC SLING, UL FRI ter Slovensko nacionalno komisijo UNESCO predstavlja prvi Arnesov vseslovenski HackathON.

Na HackathON-u skoraj 80 študentov iz vse Slovenije

Študentje so se na HackathON lahko prijavljali od 1. do 15. marca. Prijave so bile na voljo za ekipe in za posameznike. Prijavilo se je 11 posameznikov, ki smo jih razporedili v tri ekipe.

Skupno število prijavljenih tako znaša 79 študentov in študentk iz različnih slovenskih univerz, tako javnih kot zasebnih. Nezanemarljivo število predstavljajo tudi prijave študentov in študentk iz družboslovnih oz. humanističnih smeri študija. Upamo, da bo takšna raznovrstnost spodbudila interdisciplinarne rešitve izzivov.

Tekmovanje se bo odvilo v dveh krogih

Od 25. do 27. marca udeležence HackathONa najprej čaka vrsta izobraževanj na temo superračunalništva, odprte znanosti ter komuniciranja znanosti.

4. aprila ob 16. uri se bo tekmovanje uradno otvorilo s prvim krogom, ki bo potekal na Fakulteti za računalništvo in informatiko (UL). Ekipe bodo morale sestaviti idejno zasnovo rešitve izbranega izziva ter v njej opisati metodologijo, opisati nabor odprtih podatkov, ki jih bodo uporabili, zagovarjati rešitev iz družbenih vidikov ter napeljati navezavo na cilje trajnostnega razvoja UNESCO.

Drugi krog tekmovanja bo bolj praktične narave in bo potekal med 14. in 15. majem 2024 v Portorožu v sklopu konference Dnevi slovenske informatike.

HackathON, ki združuje

Namen Arnesovega HackathONa je prav združevanje različnih disciplin, ne samo znotraj STEM področja, temveč v sodelovanju z družboslovnimi in humanističnimi področji, hkrati pa si želimo tudi povezovanja študentov iz različnih slovenskih univerz. Različnost in sodelovanje sta namreč tista elementa, ki zagotavljata, da bomo lahko z rešitvami, ki jih bodo študentje predlagali na HackathONu, še bolje povezovali znanje.
